Answer to Question 4 from November, 2002

4. (5 points) Using a few words and/or a simple diagram, explain how the Rad50 protein may facilitate the holding together of broken DNA molecules.

Again, I'm going to "cheat" by using a diagram from our web site:

The diagram shows a tetramer of Rad50 molecules (plus Mre11 molecules), which are binding to DNA molecules with their ATPase + Mre11 domains and interacting with each other via their Zn-hook domains. I felt that a complete answer included mention of the Zn-hook domains, which are important for holding the two DNA molecules together. The Zn-hook domains could either be included in your illustration or mentioned in your accompanying words.
